UPDATE: First On KHQ.Com: Man Booked into Spokane County Jail for Vehicular Assault
SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -The driver of a truck who allegedly caused a collision near Trent and Pines Wednesday afternoon has been booked into the Spokane County Jail for Vehicular Assault. According to Washington State Patrol, 52 year-old Sherroll G. Hooper crossed double yellow lines and hit 54 year-old David P. Daul's 1998 Infiniti head on. Medstar was launched to the scene and transported Daul to Sacred Heart with serious injuries.

UPDATE: Investigators Now Believe 8 Year-Old Shot Brother in Head
ELMA, Wash. (AP) - Authorities investigating the shooting of a 6-year-old Mason County boy now believe it was his 8-year-old brother who shot him. On Tuesday Mason County Sheriff's deputies said the 6-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the face with a pistol he had retrieved from a locked safe in his Elma home. Chief Deputy Dean Byrd said Wednesday that new forensic evidence points to the 8-year-old brother as the shooter.

Developing Story: Missing Spokane Girl Possibly Held Against Her Will
SPOKANE, Wash.- Spokane Police need everyone to be on the lookout for a missing, and possibly at risk, teenage girl. Her name is Alyssia D. Tancredi, and police say they have information that Alyssia is potentially being held against her will in the Spokane area. Community Mourns The Loss Of Beloved Mother
COLFAX, Wash. - The Whitman County Sheriff's Office and the Whitman County Coroner's Office are currently investigating what appears to be a murder-suicide at a residence approximately 2 miles west of Thornton WA. At approximately 9:30 Wednesday morning Deputies responded to a "welfare check" at a residence approximately 2 miles west of the town of Thornton WA. Upon arrival deputies attempted to make contact with the residents in the home without success.

Rep. Minnick Donates Frequent Flyer Miles to Baker's Widow
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — U.S. Rep. Walt Minnick is donating his frequent flyer miles to the widow of Medal of Honor recipient Vernon Baker so she can attend his burial at Arlington National Cemetery. Baker, who belatedly received the nation's highest military award for his role in World War II, was 90 when he died at his home near St. Maries in northern Idaho last month.

Speeding Motorcyclists 'Taunt' WSP Trooper Trapped In Wrecked Cruiser
SEATTLE, Wash. - Police are searching for a group of motorcyclists who authorities said caused a trooper to crash and then returned to the scene to taunt him as he lay trapped his wrecked cruiser. Trooper Brian Salyer was trying to catch up to a group of motorcyclists speeding southbound on Interstate 5 near Southcenter at over 100 mph Tuesday evening.

MSNBC.COM -  University of Washington seismologists are closely monitoring another slow-moving tremor that's been detected under the Olympic Peninsula. So-called "tremor-and-slip" events have occurred about every 15 months since they were first detected in 2002.

Home Sales Surge But Prices Still Weak
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Home sales in Washington surged in the second quarter compared to a year ago, but median prices continued to decline. The Washington Center for Real Estate Research at Washington State University reported Wednesday that the decline in median home prices was much smaller than seen in recent quarters.

Tentative Agreement Reached: Deaconess/Valley Strike Avoided
SPOKANE, Wash.- KHQ has learned that the union for nurses, service and technology workers at Deaconess Medical Center and Valley Hospital have reached a tentative agreement with the hospitals to avoid a planned strike today. In total, the hospitals have approximately 2,300 employees, with approximately 950 of them represented by the SEIU. The strike would have included just over 1,000 of the union members.

Motorcyclist Dies After Accident Near Powell
POWELL, Idaho - The Idaho State Police says that a motorcyclist is dead after an accident on Highway 12, west of Powell. According to police, 61 year-old John Lingle of Aloha, Oregon was riding his motorcycle Saturday afternoon when he lost control after hitting a patch of gravel. He was thrown from the motorcycle and was not wearing a helmet. He was transported to a hospital in Missoula where he later died.

UPDATE: Fmr. Senator Ted Stevens Killed In Plane Crash; Ex Nasa Chief Lives
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – KTUU is reporting that Dave Dittman, a former aide and longtime family friend of former Sen. Ted Stevens says Stevens was killed in a plane crash near Dillingham Monday night. Dittman says he received a call overnight Monday that said the former Senator was dead. Nine people were on board, including former NASA Chief Sean O'Keefe. Five people were killed in the crash.

Police Release Identity of Officer Injured in Crash
SPOKANE, Wash. - Authorities have released the identity of a Spokane Police Officer injured as he responded to assist other officers chasing robbery suspects who had allegedly stabbed the robbery victim.  Spokane Police Officer Rhian Wilkinson suffered a neck fracture when his patrol car was slammed into by an SUV. The SUV, a GMC Envoy, was driven by 19-year-old Taylor Shockman.

Driver Fails to Yield to Big Rig: Buick Totaled
QUINCY, Wash. - A 20-year-old man driving a 1990 Buick Century didn't wait long enough before entering Hwy 281, three miles south of Quincy according to Washington State Patrol.  When he did attempt to drive on the to highway he was struck by a 2006 Peterbilt tractor hauling double flatbed trailers.

Changes Coming To Inmate Mail At The Spokane County Jail
SPOKANE, Wash. - September 1st marks the day when Spokane County Detention Services enacts new rules that restrict incoming and outgoing mail to 5.5"x 8.5" postcards. Legal correspondence will still be accepted in envelopes, and inmates can still receive approved magazines, books and newspapers. All incoming and outgoing inmate mail has been inspected for security reasons in the past.

House Passes Bill To Help Teachers, Public Workers
WASHINGTON (AP) - The House has passed a $26 billion jobs bill to protect 300,000 teachers and other nonfederal government workers from election-year layoffs. House Democratic leaders summoned lawmakers back to Washington during their summer break to act on the measure, saying that Congress could not sit idle when thousands of kids were preparing to go back to schools with depleted teaching staffs.

Joke On Boat Leads To Four Deaths In Idaho
AMERICAN FALLS, Idaho - Four men died after horsing around in a boat on a southern Idaho reservoir, authorities said late Monday. The bodies of four men were found Monday evening in the American Falls Reservoir in the same area where the men had fallen into the water a day earlier, said Cpl. Leilani Morgan of the Power County Sheriff's Department. The search began Sunday for the four boaters after authorities received a 911 call from a child on their boat.

More Than $400 Million In Unclaimed Property Refunded
OLYMPIA, Wash. - August 5, 2010 – The state Department of Revenue today announced it has surpassed $400 million in unclaimed property refunds issued since 1955. For fiscal year 2010, which ended June 30, the Department processed 98,362 claims and refunded more than $44.5 million. Over 55 years, the Unclaimed Property division has collected more than $1.1 billion.

SPOKANE, Wash. - The search for a missing 32 year-old man in Riverside State Park ended at around 11:15 Monday night. Authorities found the man alive and well.

Longview Boy Dies After Car Goes into Water
LONGVIEW, Wash. - A Cowlitz County sheriff's officer says a 9-year-old boy died when a car in which he was riding veered off a road, down an embankment and into a slough in the Longview area. The driver survived.

Ground Zero Mosque Ad Approved
NEW YORK, N.Y. - New York City's transit agency has approved a bus advertisement that depicts a plane flying toward the World Trade Center's towers as they burn along with a rendering of a proposed mosque near ground zero. The ad was paid for by the American Freedom Defense Initiative, an organization that opposes radical Islamic influence in the United States.

Candle Starts House Fire in N. Spokane
SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane firefighters responded to house fire in the 2100 block of E. Hartson early Monday afternoon. Smoke was coming from the windows of the house when firefighters arrived. A candle is to blame for starting the blaze.

Saving Cougar Bay
COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho —The calm waters of Cougar Bay are located only a couple miles from downtown Coeur d'Alene. The many log booms and pilings provide a home and shelter to several species of wildlife. "At the moment it is a refuge for osprey," said Terry Harris, Kootenai Environmental Alliance executive director. "A refuge for fish and wildlife, and a refuge for quiet fishing and kayaking."

Bomb Destroys Car in Warden
SPOKANE, Wash.- Investigators in Warden are working on figuring out who set off a car bomb late Saturday night. Law enforcement officials say the blast happened shortly after 11pm, when they started to receive calls from community members about a loud blast.

 

82-Year-Old Found In Lake Identified
OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE: The Kootenai County Sheriff's Department is releasing the name of the 82 year old male that was found in Coeur d'Alene Lake on August 7th. The deceased has been identified as Harry R. Hulley from La Mirada, CA.

Police Continue to Investigate Warden Car Bomb
WARDEN, Wash. Investigators assigned to the bomb incident which destroyed a car this past Saturday night in Warden do not believe there is any connection between the Warden incident and the two Moses Lake bombing incidents in 2008.

Tainted Pet Food Sickened Children, Report Says
CHICAGO, IL. (AP) Fido's food may be making kids sick, a government report warns, detailing the first known salmonella outbreak in humans, mostly young children, linked to pet food. The outbreak sickened 79 people in 21 mostly eastern states, between 2006 and 2008. Almost half of the victims were children aged 2 and younger. At least six unrelated pet food recalls have been issued this year by manufacturers because of possible salmonella contamination.

Honda Recalling Nearly 400,000 Vehicles
WASHINGTON (AP) - Honda Motor Co. is recalling the popular Accord and Civic passenger cars from the 2003 model year to address problems with an ignition switch that could allow the key to be removed without the transmission being shifted into park.  The recall involves 384,220 vehicles and also includes 2003-2004 model years of the Honda Element. This problem could lead to a vehicle rolling away and increase the risk of a crash.

Car Bursts Into Flames Outside Airway Heights Apartment Complex
AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. - Fire investigators are working to determine what caused one car to burst into flames outside an apartment complex in Airway Heights. The fire spread from that first car to the second car and destroyed both. At this point, investigators aren't calling the fire suspicious and say it appears to have started in the passenger compartment of one of the vehicles. There is no word on how the fire actually started but crews say it's likely accidental.

Okanogan County Deputy Involved Shooting; Suspect Due In Court
OKANOGAN COUNTY, Wash. - On Saturday night two Okanogan County Deputies responded to a domestic dispute on Hungry Hollow Road out of Havillah. The original call came in around 6:00 PM when it was reported that the suspect, James J. Landis, 61, had just run his wife over with a tractor at the residence. When deputies arrived at the scene Landis came out of the residence and fired several rounds at one of the patrol vehicles striking it several times.

@ This Hour: Police: 4 Men Feared Drowned In Idaho Reservoir
AMERICAN FALLS, IDAHO (AP) - Two search and rescue teams and a National Guard helicopter crew are looking again today for four missing men who are feared drowned in a southern Idaho reservoir. Divers and search and rescue crews from Bingham and Power counties are focusing on an area where a floating hat had been found the evening before. The searchers were aided by a Blackhawk helicopter and 4-person crew from the Idaho Army National Guard.

4 Men Feared Drowned In Idaho Reservoir
AMERICAN FALLS, IDAHO (AP) - Four men are missing and feared drowned in a southern Idaho reservoir after 1 of the men was pushed into the water and the others tried to rescue him. Power County sheriffs officials say they received a report at 5:30 p.m. Sunday from five children saying they were drifting in a boat on American Falls Reservoir. The oldest child was 9.

12th Person Killed By Washington Trains This Year
SEATTLE, Wash.- The 12th person to be killed by a train in Washington state died over the weekend at Tacoma General Hospital. A teenage girl was killed and a boy was injured when they were hit by an Amtrak train near Titlow Park on Sunday. Officials said the two, both 18 years old, were on the tracks when they were hit about 6:30 p.m. 

Structure Fire in Spokane Valley
SPOKANE, Wash. - At around 4:30pm Saturday evening, fire crews responded to a house fire in the 8100 Block of South Riverway in Spokane Valley.  A primary search of the house found no one inside, and firefighters were able to save two dogs. According to authorities, the fire appeared to be centered in the attic of the house, causing the roof to collapse.

2 Dead and 1 Injured in Car Accident Near Soap Lake
GRANT COUNTY, Wash. - 2 people are dead after a single car accident Friday night about 14 miles east of Soap Lake. According to Washington State Patrol, the vehicle was traveling westbound on Highway 28 when it left the roadway and rolled into a ditch. 18 year-old Christopher Johnson died at the scene. 17 year-old Kameron Kuch was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where he later died.

Official Press Release for Saturday Morning Patrol Car Crash
SPOKANE, Wash. - An early-morning armed robbery left the victim with a non-life threatening stab wound and a Spokane Police Officer with neck injuries after a GMC Envoy collided with his patrol car as he responded to assist officers chasing the suspects. The name of the injured officer is being withheld until Monday.  He reportedly has a non-life threatening neck fracture he suffered when the SUV driven by 19-year-old Taylor R. Shockman broadsided his patrol car.

Pocatello Police Catch Sought After Graffiti Artist
POCATELLO, Idaho - Authorities say they have caught a graffiti artist whose "BZR" mark has been appearing atop some of the highest and hardest-to-reach places on buildings and signs in the southeastern Idaho city of Pocatello. Authorities say 19-year-old Ryan P. Hanson of Pocatello has been issued a summons to appear on two misdemeanor counts of malicious injury to property.

Kagan Sworn in as 112th Justice to Serve on the Supreme Court
WASHINGTON D.C. - Elena Kagan has been sworn in as the 112th justice and fourth woman ever to serve on the Supreme Court. Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath to Kagan in a ceremony Saturday at the court. Joined by family and friends, Kagan pledged in the oath to faithfully and impartially uphold the law.

Spirit Lake Medal of Honor Recipient Passes Away at 64
SPIRIT LAKE, Idaho - Staff Sergeant David C. Dolby, who earned the Medal of Honor for his service in Vietnam passed away Friday morning in Spirit Lake, Idaho at age 64. Sergeant Dolby was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division, Company B, 1st battalion (Airborne) 8th Cavalry. President Lyndon B. Johnson presented Staff Sergeant David Dolby with the Medal of Honor, the highest award given to those who acted with uncommon, selfless courage, on Sept. 28, 1967.

SPOKANE, Wash. - A Spokane Police Officer is in a local hospital this morning with serious injuries after being hit by an SUV in Downtown Spokane early Saturday morning. Authorities say there was a stabbing near Division and Augusta that lead to a pursuit. While assisting in locating the stabbing suspects, a police officer was hit by an SUV near Brown and Riverside. The officer was seriously injured in the accident and taken to a local hospital.

Montana Man Tries to Use UPS to Ship Marijuana
MISSOULA, Mont. - A 24-year-old Missoula man accused of trying to use UPS to ship a package containing two pounds of marijuana has been charged with a pair of felonies. Charging documents filed in Justice Court on Friday say Nicholas T. Navarro was arrested after an employee at a UPS store in Missoula spotted the marijuana through a strip of clear packing tape and called police.

Referee Acknowledges Mistake in Seahawks Vs. Steelers Super Bowl
RENTON, Wash. -- NFL referee Bill Leavy acknowledged he made mistakes in the Seattle Seahawks' 2006 Super Bowl loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The veteran official began an annual training-camp rules interpretation session with the Seattle media after practice on Friday by bringing up the subject without being asked.

Gov. Schwarzenegger Calls for Same Sex Marriages
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Gay couples could again be allowed to tie the knot in California if Gov. Schwarzenegger and Attorney General Jerry Brown get their way. Schwarzenegger and Brown, along with lawyers for gay couples, have filed legal motions telling a federal judge that allowing same-sex marriages to resume immediately is the right thing to do.

UPDATE: Idaho Department of Corrections Seeks Walkaway Inmate
BOISE, Idaho - An Idaho Correctional Institution Community Work Center resident who failed to return from a job interview early Friday morning has surrendered. Christopher Abram called the work center around 5pm Friday and reported his location. The Ada County Sheriff's Office took Abram into custody and transported him the Idaho State Correctional Institution south of Boise.

Candlelight Vigil Friday Night for Bill Pickard
SPOKANE, Wash. - A candlelight vigil will be held Friday night in High Bridge Park for Bill Pickard. Pickard's body was found under the Sunset Bridge on June 30th. His death is being ruled a homicide and so far, there have been no arrests. Friday night would have been Pickard's birthday. His family decided to hold a candlelight vigil to honor the memory of Bill and raise awareness that his murder is still unsolved.

U.S. Attending Hiroshima Memorial for the First Time
HIROSHIMA, Japan - Hiroshima is holding a memorial to mark the 65th anniversary of the world's first atomic bomb attack, with the U.S. and other major nuclear powers attending for the first time. This year's memorial, which began with the offering of water to the dead, is being attended by representatives of the U.S., Britain, France and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Convicted Murderer Sentenced To Life, No Parole
SPOKANE, Wash. – The man convicted of murdering two young adults in 2008 and setting fire to the crime scene in hopes of destroying evidence was sentenced to consecutive life terms in prison without the possibility of parole. Sarah Clark and Tanner Pehl were remembered as young adults with mounds of potential which will go unfulfilled because of their murders. Friends and family members testified for more than three hours about the effect the murders on other lives.

Montana Highway Patrol Seeking Help in Hit and Run of Spokane Woman
MISSOULA, Mont. - The Montana Highway Patrol is seeking information about a hit-and-run that severely injured a Washington woman near Saltese in northwestern Montana. Trooper Richard Hader says a 45-year-old woman from the Spokane area was struck by a van on Interstate 90 at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The woman was identified Wednesday evening through fingerprints and with the help of Seattle police. She was not carrying any identification and was unresponsive at the scene.

Montana Judge Questions Early Jail Releases
MISSOULA, Mont. - A western Montana judge is questioning why the Missoula County Detention Center is choosing to release prisoners before sentences are complete. Municipal Judge Marie Anderson in a letter obtained by the Missoulian told jail authorities she was not away of any legal authority allowing the jail to unilaterally release prisoners.

Chavez Warns of US Oil Cutoff in Colombia Dispute
CARACAS, Venezuela - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is threatening stop selling oil to the United States if his country is attacked by its U.S.-allied neighbor Colombia. Chavez says in the event of an "armed aggression against Venezuela ... we would suspend shipments of oil to the United States."

BP's Hayward is Out; Work on Well Resuming
NEW ORLEANS, La. - A change in leadership may be in the offing at BP. A senior U.S. government official says the company's gaffe-prone chief executive, Tony Hayward, is being replaced and could be gone as early as tomorrow. Hayward has been under fire for his handling of the Gulf oil spill. He was also criticized for saying he wanted his "life back," and for going to a yacht race in England while oil washed up on Gulf shores.

Probe Sends Detailed Asteroid Images
(CNN) -- A European space probe headed toward its next target Sunday after sending back detailed images of an asteroid that scientists hope will increase understanding of how the solar system evolved. Pictures of the asteroid Lutetia from the Rosetta probe's deep space fly-by Saturday are some of the most detailed ever taken, the European Space Agency said.

Missing Clarkston Woman's Estranged Husband Pleads Guilty
COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - Charles Capone, the estranged husband of missing Clarkston, WA woman Rachael Anderson, has changed his plea to guilty for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.  Sentencing is set for September 27th. Capone initially faced two federal firearms charges and pleaded innocent, but that changed Tuesday in U.S. District Court when Capone pleaded guilty to one of the charges as part of an agreement with prosecutors.

Quincy Man Leads Cops on High Speed Chase in Ambulance
QUINCY, Wash. - A man is in serious trouble with the law after police say he stole an ambulance and led police on a high speed chase Saturday, July 3rd.  Quincy Police responded to a report of an ambulance belonging to Quincy Valley Ambulance Service being stolen.  The ambulance was stolen while the crew was inside a residence assisting a patient.

First on KHQ: Pend Oreille Lake Boating Fatalities
SANDPOINT, Idaho - KHQ has learned the identities of two people killed in a boating accident Saturday night in Sandpoint. Darby Campbell, 30, and his wife Amber Campbell, 34, both of Sandpoint, died in the accident. A third person survived the mishap. Gerred Campbell, who is 31, was taken to Bonner General Hospital.

Man Shoots Burglar With Hunting Bow; May Be Charged
KELSO, Wash. - A prosecutor in Washington state says she's still deciding how to proceed with a December case in which authorities say a man shot a prowler in the buttocks with a hunting bow. Cowlitz County prosecutor Sue Baur says she's been studying related case law but has yet to determine what, if any, charges to file against Scott Allen Schwingdorf of Kelso.

Sources: Missing Boy's Stepmother Tried Murder-for-Hire
PORTLAND, Ore. - The stepmother of missing Oregon boy Kyron Horman attempted to hire a landscaper to kill her husband several months ago, CNN affiliates KGW and KATU reported Monday, citing sources with knowledge of the investigation. KGW reported that sources believe the woman, Terri Horman, approached the landscaper, who had been working on the family's property in northwest Portland, Oregon, and offered the man "a large sum of money" to kill her husband, Kaine Horman.
